Some of The Lessons Life Has Shown Me

{Appreciate the Moment}

"right now only happens once"

{Take time to notice}

{Now and then, view life from someone else's point of view}

{It's all a matter of
per
spec
tive}

{Slow Down}

{The Golden Rule Always Applies}

{The truth can set you free}

{Look for the good in others}

{It's always there, you just have to take notice}

{Step off the fast track}

{Focus on what really matters}

{Honesty is always the best policy}

{Children enjoy the present, which very few of us do.}

{Stop. Look. Listen.}

{Today is the first day of the rest of your life.}

{Photos - Snowbird 2011}

Dawn, the mother of my students, Karsen and Kyle, who also happens to work at Snowbird, offered me complimentary passes from a friend of hers from work. He met us up there, since he was working today and graciously gave us all-inclusive passes, to not just the tram but everything that Snowbird has to offer. We spent the afternoon enjoying the cool mountain weather and stayed late into the night listening to the music from the music festival. The best things in life are like that...unexpected, and unplanned. Don't you think? :)

State Champs

Some rare raw footage from tonights exciting State Championship Final! The boys played great and Max was just happy to be there. He didn't play but they still gave him a HUGE trophy after. He was a little embarrassed to be getting a trophy I think, but his coaches all insisted that he earned it. Coach Rob came up to me after and must have told me three or four times, "Thank you for bringing Max up here for the game." He also said he isn't finished yet, the Pacific Southwest Regional games start on the 25th and they want him to be there for those as well, since they are the host league. Bring on more baseball, I guess.

AAA All-Star Game

Thanks to Jay, one of Max's all-star coaches, for giving him tickets to the triple A all-star game tonight. It was an enjoyable evening complete with the biggest fireworks show in the history of the Bees.

Gamers

{Morgen and Friends}
Morgen invited his friend Alex over to spend the night tonight and his friend Will just to hang out. It just so happened to be the same night that Markus invited his friend Cooper over to spend the night as well. Party central over here.

Morgen was in a pretty good mood today as well. He just got his AP test scores in the mail. As it turns out he was thinking that he didn't do very well, it was the Calculus AB test and he didn't study. Since he received a 4 out of 5, imagine what he could do if he studied. Depending upon which college he ends up going to, he may have just received eight math college credit hours. But don't bother talking to him about it, he is busy playing a game with his friends. :)

Rockwell

{Starting line of the 169.7 mile relay race}

{My friend Sharon turned the big 4.0. this week and wanted to celebrate by riding in the women only relay race from Snowbasin to Provo}

{Sharon's friend Kristen joined the team just this week}

{Kristen and Sharon each rode their two legs plus a couple of the other legs just for fun!}

{B, Sharon and Kim overlooking Jordanelle while supporting Kristen in one of her legs of the race}
It was a beautiful day for a race and the course was breathtaking, riding past not one, but seven different reservoirs. The first being Pineview, followed by East Canyon, then the third reservoir, Echo. Yet, another one, Rockport was followed by Smith and Morehouse Reservoir, then Jordanelle followed by Deer Creek, at which point I really was ready to jump in the lake! Our team didn't win, but we didn't come in last either. It was a ride to enjoy and remember - an event that I wouldn't mind doing again next year if I get the opportunity. The sense of personal and team accomplishment, plus the camaraderie was great. The fun pampering and beautiful scenery that we passed were the icing on the cake.

Lost and Found

Guess what? I found my camera that I thought I had lost at Little Red last month. I am SO excited as it had more pictures on it then I even remembered! Yay! So to make up for lost photos here are some that I wasn't able to post. Yet.:)

{Playing at the park and having a barbecue. Fun way to wind up elementary school.}

P.S. I found my camera in the bottom of the bag where I keep all the parts to my bike rack. As I was putting the bike rack on the car tonight, in preparation for my Rockwell Relay ride tomorrow, I looked in the bag and couldn't believe my eyes!

Viola! My little pink camera.

Appointments

I have nightmares about school starting. I schedule and never miss appointments with all these boys around to remind me. Hair, dentist, orthodontist—check, check, check. I just barely collected then trashed the burnt up firework cylinders from the 4th. I have a craving for Red Mango with a granola mix in. All the time. The kids go back and forth from filthy to clean but only because they’re wet from the garden hose. Boxes of otter pops are dusted off as soon as they’re opened. Afternoons are frittered away on stacks of library books. Okay, I’m lying: Spongebob. We’ve broken four super soaker squirt guns and now we’re on to water balloons whose plastic fragments cling to my windows and driveway. We know the skateguards’ names at the rink. Worse, they know ours! And they yell them out loud while my kids prove their learned summer bravery: the youngest playing glove hockey, throwing his gloves all over the ice, the older one ignoring my cries for them to stop throwing things on the ice, to watch where they jump, to give the cone back to the kid they just stole it from. I think nothing of spending $14 on sub-zero just to make it from evening to bedtime without locking my kids in the backyard while I zone out staring at the computer.

We’ve reached it, we’re here: the dog days.

My flowers have died from my lack of watering. (The kids are hogging the hose.) And when I do finally water, I watch it as it percolates down through the bone dry soil and lament my carelessness while making silent promises to not buy hanging baskets next spring. I will forget, allured by their beauty, my grand visions of not losing all will to do anything productive mid-summer. I just spent too much money on groceries that have already been eaten! Morgen has had cereal for dinner not once, not twice, but three times in a week’s time. We’ve forgotten what bedtime is and we are like monks now—rising with the sun, going to sleep with it too.

Really, I love it like this. When the force of my day is like ocean’s tidal shift—and I just float with it, in and out, doing whatever, whenever. I can’t help it. Really. It must be a July thing. I’m sweaty. I’m hot and tired. I feel the physical toils of mothering down in my bones and across my back, and at night I sleep and sleep the deep slumber of a mother hard-worked. And that’s got to mean something, right? Because even in the midst of the dog days, when I feel at my least productive and run haggard by having fun (imagine the thought!) I still always think: they are such good kids.

Tell me...what do you do in the summertime?

Hope

Last week, about mid-afternoon, something emotionally devastating happened to me. The details of it are not important. The important thing is that I was a total and complete wreck in every way. I wanted to talk about it right then with someone who loved me unconditionally, someone I could rely on to take my side (at least until I was ready to hear criticism).

So I prayed.

It wasn’t much of a conversation since I wasn’t ready to listen and I didn’t have time to spend on my knees anyway. It was just sort of a shout out to God: “I’m here, and I need you NOW!” I didn’t feel any immediate help or consolation, but I was able to make it through the day.

I've always liked the movie Hope Floats and not just because it has Harry Connick Jr. in it. It always makes me cry no matter how many times I have seen it. Do you have any movies like that? That make you emotional no matter how many times you watch them? Well, I do, anyways, so I came home and watched it while I was folding the laundry. At the end of the movie, Sandra Bullocks' character, Birdee says,
"Beginnings are scary. Endings are usually sad, but it's what's in the middle that counts. So, when you find yourself at the beginning, just give hope a chance to float up. And it will."

I guess the role of faith in all this is not necessarily the assurance that I won’t feel alone, but the assurance that God knows what He’s doing with me, even if it hurts.

Coolest Place in Town

Where do you go on the hottest day of the year? The coolest place in town...the ice rink! Max won two of his three games tonight at 3 on 3. He scored three goals and was pretty sweaty when he got off the ice. As only 5 of the 8 players from his team where there tonight. He told me afterwards that he has had a fun time playing this summer.
