Connor Shawn

Sheri had her baby yesterday at 2:24 p.m. and he weighed 7 lbs. 8 oz. and was 19" long. They named him Connor Shawn and he looked beautiful. She nursed him and sent him for a bath with Shane and the nurse. When Shane came back he told her there was something seriously wrong with Connor and they were sending him to the NICU. After several tests and 30 hours they still didn't know what was wrong so they decided to life flight him to Primary Children's hospital today. The nurse told Sheri to take some photos and gave Connor to her to hold one last time, before giving her his blanket and bracelets.

She had no idea if she would ever see him again alive. Her friend Ashley called to tell me they were life flighting him and I told her I would go to the hospital. Sheri and Shane had to drive and arrived two hours later. By the time they got there, the Dr.'s at Primary's had determined it was a heart problem and ordered an EKG and Echo right away. Connor is in critical condition at PICU. I stayed with them until almost midnight tonight, and they still hadn't determined what exactly was wrong with his heart.

Live

DIVE into life, EMBRACE the unknown, DARE to live.

My sister Sheri gave me a book mark with that quote on it for my birthday. She is being induced today with her 8th baby. (On Sunday she was already a week over due, pictured above.) She is having a boy sometime today hopefully. Her oldest daughter Tori is 17, then Nadalynn is 14, Michael is 13 (step-son) Cole (who lives with my parents) is 11, McKenna (step-daughter) 10, Whitney is 8 and Josslyn is 19 months.

Christmas Day

Some photos from Christmas day at the Buck's. Max gave Hannah a C.D. of the soundtrack from Glee, her favorite show. Ma Buck gave all the grandkids a $15 gift card to Old Navy. And Sammy bears gave Markus an Indiana Jones lego set, which he was so excited to start building that he and I set it up on the table and started building it right away.

Julianna, Shelby and Alyssa, Chad's daughter's had to leave by 1:00 to go to their Mom's house, so it was kind of crazy to get all the gifts opened by then since the party didn't start until 12:00 but they made it work. Shelby is due with a little boy in March.

Skating Christmas Party

Some more photos from last nights Christmas skating party. We all brought soup, and two other things to contribute to the dinner, I brought rolls and dessert.

Candie brought her boyfriend Jake...

You would never know it but, my sister Marilee's son, Casey and Morgen are exactly 6 weeks apart! Morgen gave him an Xbox 360 game for the gift exchange.

Whitney gave Max a lab in a bag kit and a laser guided remote control car.

Markus gave Cole a Nerf tag gun.

Kailey gave Morgen Modern Warfare, the game he wanted.

Max gave Nadalynn some slippers and makeup that she wanted from Victoria's Secret.

It was some party and I think that my parents were glad they decided to have it at the rink. Even if it was kind of crowded in the skate trailer with 31 people, it was cozy nonetheless.

A rink of his own...

Markus was one of the first ones on the ice tonight at my parent's Christmas party. And when everyone else got off the ice, he said, "Yes, finally the whole rink to myself!" He was still out there skating around and my dad turned out the lights on him.

More Sledding...

On Christmas Eve, after the Buck's family photo shoot, the boys wanted to go sledding again with their cousins who were here from Texas and Vegas, so we went again. It was all good until their cousin Maddie was pushed down the hill and went off the jump face first. She came up with a bloody nose and a fat lip. Poor thing, I felt so bad for her. She looked a little bit like Cindy Lou-Who because her mouth was so swollen.

Christmas Jars

I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month. ~Harlan Miller

Snowday

My friend Wendy sent me this cartoon in an email last week and I thought it was pretty funny.

Winter Solstice

Yesterday was the winter solstice and the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. It's all due to the Earth's tilt, which ensures that the shortest day of every year falls around December 21.

But it's not all about astronomy.

Since ancient times people have marked the winter solstice with countless cultural and religious traditions—it's no coincidence the modern holiday season surrounds the first day of winter.

During the winter solstice the sun hugs closer to the horizon than at any other time during the year, yielding the least amount of daylight annually. On the bright side, today marks the beginning of lengthening days leading up to the summer solstice.

"Solstice" is derived from the Latin phrase for "sun stands still."

That's because—after months of growing shorter and lower since the summer solstice—the sun's arc through the sky appears to stabilize, with the sun seeming to rise and set in the same two places for several days. Then the arc begins growing longer and higher in the sky, reaching its peak at the summer solstice.

The solstices occur twice a year (around December 21 and June 21), because Earth is tilted by an average of 23.5 degrees as it orbits the sun—the same phenomenon that drives the seasons.

During the warmer half of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, the North Pole is tilted toward the sun. The northern winter solstice occurs when the "top" half of Earth is tilted away from the sun at its most extreme angle of the year.

Being the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice is essentially the year's darkest day, but it's not the coldest.

Because the oceans are slow to heat and cool, in December they still retain some warmth from summer, delaying the coldest of winter days for another month and a half. Similarly, summer doesn't hit its heat peak until August, a month or two after the summer solstice.

Throughout history, humans have celebrated the winter solstice, often with an appreciative eye toward the return of summer sunlight.

Massive prehistoric monuments such as Ireland's mysterious Newgrange tomb are aligned to capture the light at the moment of the winter solstice sunrise.

The mysterious Newgrange passage mound—part tomb and part sun temple—is Ireland's biggest archaeological attraction. Every year thousands enter a lottery for a chance to bathe in winter solstice sunlight in the prehistoric monument's main chamber.

Germanic peoples of Northern Europe honored the winter solstice with Yule festivals—the origin of the still-standing tradition of the long-burning Yule log.

The Roman feast of Saturnalia, honoring the God Saturn, was a weeklong December feast that included the observance of the winter solstice. Romans also celebrated the lengthening of days following the solstice by paying homage to Mithra—an ancient Persian god of light.

Winter Solstice's Christmas Connection

Scholars aren't exactly sure of the date of Jesus Christ's birthday, the first Christmas.

"In the early years of the Christian church, the calendar was centered around Easter," George Washington University's Yeide said. "Nobody knows exactly where and when they began to think it suitable to celebrate Christ's birth as well as the Passion cycle"—the Crucifixion and resurrection depicted in the Bible.

Eastern churches traditionally celebrate Christmas on January 6, a date known as Epiphany in the West. The winter date may have originally been chosen on the basis that Christ's conception and Crucifixion would have fallen during the same season—and a spring conception would have resulted in a winter birth.

But Christmas soon became co-mingled with traditional observances of the first day of winter.

"As the Christmas celebration moved west," Yeide said "the date that had traditionally been used to celebrate the winter solstice became sort of available for conversion to the observance of Christmas. In the Western church the December date became the date for Christmas."

Early church leaders endeavored to attract pagans to Christianity by adding Christian meaning to existing winter solstice festivals.

"This gave rise to an interesting play on words," Yeide said. "In several languages, not just in English, people have traditionally compared the rebirth of the sun with the birth of the son of God."

1st day of Christmas vacation

Morgen, Max and Markus spent their first day of Christmas vacation hanging out and playing. They wanted to go play Laser Tag, so we drove over there, but they weren't open yet. So we went back after I taught skating. They all finished school for the year on Friday. Max and Markus had a sing along at school that I went to but forgot my camera and I was WAY too far away so the pictures I took with my phone didn't turn out at all. Oh, well. They still sang great and had a fun time. Especially when the bell rang for school to be out for 2 weeks!

A visit with Santa

Grandpa Buck has played Santa at the farm for over 10 years now and we have been going to visit him almost every year since then. Last night the boys all sat on his lap and told him what they wanted for Christmas, then he gave them a candy cane. Markus asked Santa for Legos for Christmas.

Max finally thought of something to ask Santa (Madden 2010 for PS3) for Christmas.

Morgen asked for an iTouch from Grandpa ho-ho

Max's friend Killian was going on his tenth thing that he wanted for Christmas when Grandpa stopped him and said to hold on a minute, he had him on the bad list this year! He proceeded to tell him about his "Little Birdies" that live outside the farm house on the porch that tell him everything that boys and girls have been up to this year. Sure enough when we went outside, there was a little pair of birds with nests right outside the door, Santa's birds.

Hannah, Morgen, Julieanna, Max, Sam, Santa, Lucas, Markus, Noah & Allyssa.

It was a fun night to visit with Santa and all the cousins were there.

Then afterwards we went to go see 2012. The boys have been waiting to go see it and were excited. If I were you, I would save your money and wait for it to come out on video though.

Celebrate good times

Markus' team played the Penguins yesterday and he scored another goal! I wish I had my video camera because after he scored he dropped down on one knee and celebrated like Max had taught him to do.

Max's game X 2

Max's Lightning team played a great game against the Renegades last night and tied 2-2.

He had another game today with his house team

against the Black Bears and the Knights won

4-0 with Max scoring a goal

and taking so many shots on the net, I lost track.

(Notice Markus climbing on the glass. Little rink rat!)
